Vix Technology's goal: Scaling DevOps to support growth

Vix Technology is a global leader in automatic fare collection, transit information and transit analytics solutions. For over 35 years, their experts have been helping to shape the way transport moves and evolves.

Vix approached JourneyOne to assist them in scaling AWS DevOps capability to meet demand from growth projects.

Scaling with automation on AWS

With imminent deployments necessary to support new customers, JourneyOne’s engineering team collaborated with key software development stakeholders at Vix Technology to understand the scaling challenges and current configuration. The impact of a recent organisational restructure added complexity to the solution options considered, requiring segregation of device management and associated workloads.

Multi-account cloud operating platform and migration

JourneyOne proposed a pragmatic plan to configure a new, minimal multi-account operating platform for Vix Technology’s devices business. This enabled Vix Technology to meet immediate growth-driven demand whilst providing for subsequent evolution. The IoT device fleet and associated device management workloads were then migrated and/or reconfigured for the new operating platform.

Infrastructure as code and deployment automation

To support growth and sustainable operations, JourneyOne advised and supported Vix Technology to capture their workload configuration. This ‘infrastructure as code’ was then used to automate deployments. The capability to repeatably and consistently deploy environments delivered immediate benefit, improving software quality and reducing deployment failure rates. It also enabled key personnel to focus on higher value activities.


The broad set of activities, from platform implementation and workload/device migration to deployment automation, required JourneyOne to demonstrate skills with a broad set of AWS deployment services (e.g. CDK, CloudFormation and Code*), platform management services (e.g. IAM and CloudWatch), device management services (e.g. IoT Core) and application services (e.g. API Gateway, Lambda etc.).
